What is Startup India DPIIT Recognition?
The Startup India program encourages and supports the startup ecosystem in India. It aims to promote new businesses by providing them with various benefits & exemptions, such as tax holidays & access to government funding and incubator programs. Benefits of Startup India DPIIT Recognition
DPIIT recognized Startups are eligible to get the following benefits under the Startup India Initiative:
- Self-Certification: Startups shall be allowed to self-certify compliance for 6 Labor Laws and 3 Environmental Laws through a simple online procedure to reduce the regulatory burden on Startups and keep compliance costs low.
- Tax Exemption under 80-IAC: Pvt Ltd Companies and LLPs are exempted from paying income tax for three consecutive financial years under Section 80-IAC out of the first ten years since incorporation.
- Fast-tracking of Startup Patent Applications: Patent applications filed by Startups shall be fast-tracked for examination to realize their value sooner. Startups shall also be provided an 80% rebate on patent filing costs to help them reduce costs in the crucial formative years.
- Easier Public Procurement Norms: DPIIT recognized Startups could register on GeM as sellers and sell their products/services directly to Government entities. It is an incredible chance for Startups to participate in public procurement and access another potential market for their products.
- Panel of facilitators to assist in filling IP applications: The Central Government will handle the entire fees of the facilitators for patents, trademarks, or methods that a Startup may file. The Startups must pay the expense of the statutory fees only.
Eligibility for Startup India DPIIT Recognition

- First of all, the business entity/startup must be new, not split from the existing company.
- To get Startup India DPIIT Recognition, businesses should be registered under the following business forms:
- Private Ltd Company
- One-Person Company
- Partnership Firm
- Limited Liability Partnership
- As per the guidelines of DPIIT, the businesses should have an annual business turnover of fewer than 100 crores.
- To get recognized under the DPIIT Startup India recognition, the entity should not be older than 10 years from the day of its incorporation.
- Last but not the least, perhaps most importantly, the entity must be innovative and scalable. It is one of the essential criteria to be considered by DPIIT for startup India registration because the program aims to promote innovation and generate business and jobs in the country.
Documents required for Startup India DPIIT Recognition
The entities must submit the following documents for Startup India DPIIT Recognition: Authorization Letter, PAN Card, Certificate of Incorporation, website or companies profile deck, photo & video of products/services, and brief write-up on how the business is working towards (such as innovation in the industry, high potential for wealth creation and potential for employment generation, etc.).
After all of these requirements have been met, then only a company can be awarded this certificate. Very limited companies in India have received this honor thus far. In the past 7 years, only 1162 startups out of 2,50,000+ startups registered in India have been awarded this ‘Certificate of Eligible Business’ by the DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade), Government of India.
